About Alcoholics Anonymous

A simple explanation of what AA is, who it is for, and what a person can expect when exploring recovery.

A gentle place to begin

If drinking has become difficult to control, a meeting can be a simple first step. You do not need to have everything figured out before you walk in.

Overview

What is AA?

Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of people who share their experience, strength, and hope with each other so they may solve their common problem and help others recover from alcoholism.

AA is not a medical programme, treatment centre, church, or counselling service. It is a peer-support fellowship where people who have had trouble with alcohol help one another stay sober.

No dues or fees

AA meetings are self-supporting through voluntary contributions.

Open to anyone with a desire to stop drinking

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking.

Anonymous and practical

AA focuses on recovery, service, and daily sobriety.

What happens at a meeting?

Meetings may include readings, speakers, discussion, step study, or members sharing their own recovery experience. A newcomer can simply listen. No one needs to explain everything on the first day.

You can sit down, listen, and decide later what makes sense for you.
