Sponsorship in AA
A sponsor is an AA member who shares experience and helps another person work through recovery.
A gentle place to begin
If drinking has become difficult to control, a meeting can be a simple first step. You do not need to have everything figured out before you walk in.
What is a sponsor?
A sponsor is usually someone with sobriety experience who helps another alcoholic understand AA, attend meetings, and work through the Twelve Steps.
Sponsorship is not professional counselling. A sponsor is one alcoholic helping another by sharing personal experience, practical suggestions, and accountability.
How sponsors help
They explain meetings, Steps, service, prayer, inventory, amends, and daily sober living.
How to ask
Listen for someone whose recovery you respect and ask whether that person sponsors others.
If it is not a fit
It is okay to find a different sponsor. The goal is recovery, honesty, and willingness.
